Phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant bioactivesmay prove to be beneficial in skin repair and wound healing. Wound healing mainly involves the recapitulation of the skin’s form and function (I.e homeostasis and a barrier to noxious external stimuli) inclusive of reconstruction of damaged epithelium and dermis. The three main barriers to wound healing are inflammation, sepsis, and pain; therefore, the effective treatment of these barriers could aid in the healing process. One of the primary functions of the skin is to modulate inflammatory immune responses, in which the endocannabinoid system could largely play a vital role. It has been shown in previous literature that various compounds derived from the Cannabis plant and essential oil botanicals such as phytocannabinoids and terpenes, specifically cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), myrcene, humulene and Beta-caryophyllene can act as anti-inflammatory agents, on human skin cells, i.e. peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) dermatofibroblasts, and keratinocytes.  WISH Skin Labs is studying phytocannabinoids for skin repair and wound healing, deploying innovative cell culture technology and methods to assess for safety and efficacy using gene expression and novel phenotypic cytokine assays. WISH intends to further optimize and validate biomarkers that correlate with a biologic signature of our complementary health approaches, and finally validate our proprietary phytopharmacological formulation that will ultimately permit FDA approval for skin repair and wound healing as new indications for hemp-derived cannabinoids.
